Religion has historically played a central role in this. On the other hand, Fromm is one of the harshest critics of religion in modern times. A religion’s claim to validity and truth must be measured against the effects that religion and religious practice have on the physical, mental, spiritual and social well-being of people and society.<\/p>\n
With regard to the individual, religion (with all its forms of expression – from the content of faith, forms of prayer and rituals to the institutional constitution of religious communities) must be measured by its humanizing effects: that religion strengthens and promotes people’s independence and freedom and therefore their psychological growth potential. Religion and religious practice must contribute to people developing a desire to draw on their own strengths and possibilities. According to Fromm, every religion, but also every world view, every global ethic and every philosophy, even atheism, must be measured against this essentially humanistic criterion.<\/p>\n
Both “faces” of religion will be discussed at this conference.
