The Erich Fromm Prize 2021 will be awarded to:

Prof. Dr. Maja Göpel

on Monday, June 21st, 2021, 6:00 p.m., at Hospitalhof in Stuttgart / Germany

Maja Göpel is a political economist, system transformation scholar, future justice campaigner, university lecturer and project leader dedicated to the quest of finding out how we can collectively bring about the sustainable societies that we individually wish for. Like Erich Fromm, she enjoys shaking up established ways of thinking and doing, to inspire new views on possible futures. In order to bring these ideas to life, she loves to discover and build unusual alliances. In her book The Great Mindshift she presents a new economic paradigm which is conducive to a sustainability transformation.

Maja Göpel pleads for thinking about alternatives, because just »carrying on« [»Weiter so«] would lead to catastrophic conditions. She thus stands in the tradition of Erich Fromm's books The Sane Society (1955), The Revolution of Hope (1968), and To Have or To Be? (1976), which were also intended as contributions and suggestions for rethinking.

The Erich Fromm Prize, endowed with 10.000 €, honors persons and initiatives which, through their scholarly, scientific, social, sociopolitical, or journalistic commitment, have achieved or continue to achieve excellence in preserving or reviving humanistic thought and action in the tradition of Erich Fromm. Former recipients include Eugen Drewermann, Konstantin Wecker, Jakob von Uexküll, Noam Chomsky, Anne Sophie Mutter, Christel and Rupert Neudeck, John Neumeier, Hartmut Rosa, and Paul Mason.

The award celebration will take place at the Hospitalhof in Stuttgart, Germany, on Monday evening, June 21, 2021, 6:00 p.m. Part of the award celebration will be the Erich Fromm Lecture by Maja Göpel. Gesine Schwan, the 2013 recipient of the Fromm prize, will give the laudation. Tickets for the ceremony can be ordered from the Business Bureau of the International Erich Fromm Society, c/o Klaus Widerström, E-Mail: info@fromm-gesellschaft.de
