The International Erich Fromm Society Signs an Open Letter on Nuclear Disarmament
At its general meeting on May 23, 2026, the International Erich Fromm Society unanimously resolved to sign the open letter marking the 30th anniversary of the ICJ advisory opinion on the illegality of nuclear weapons under international law.
On July 8, 1996, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled in a landmark advisory opinion that the threat or use of nuclear weapons is, in principle, a violation of international humanitarian law. Thirty years later, this finding remains distressingly relevant: tensions and wars involving nuclear-armed states, billions in investments in new nuclear weapons, and the ongoing erosion of arms control make a nuclear war more likely than ever.
The appeal launched “now” by the member organizations of the “Aktionsbündnis atomwaffenfrei.now” in cooperation with ICAN Germany calls on the federal government and the Bundestag to take a firm stand in favor of nuclear arms control and the strengthening of international law, to support the goals of the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW), and to prepare for Germany’s accession to the treaty.
For the Erich Fromm Society, this step is directly linked to Fromm’s thinking: His advocacy for a humanistic, life-affirming society and his warning against the destructive forces that threaten humanity and its future make the commitment to nuclear disarmament a logical cause. Not least among the first signatories of the letter is Dr. Rainer Funk, the executor of Erich Fromm’s estate.
