The German-Japanese artist Prof. Dr. Hito Steyerl will be awarded the Erich Fromm Prize 2025 by the International Erich Fromm Society. This was decided by the jury chaired by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Hardeck. The award ceremony will take place on Saturday, March 8, 2025 in a matinee event at 11:00 a.m. at the Hospitalhof Education Center in Stuttgart.

Søren Grammel, renowned curator and expert on contemporary art, will give the laudatory speech for the prizewinner.

The jury justified its decision as follows:
“Hito Steyerl’s work at the interface of visual art and film as well as her philosophical reflections on social developments are social analysis and social criticism using the means of contemporary art. In her films and video installations, she masterfully combines the aesthetic penetration of visual mass culture with an act of mediating theory and practice. Her work is in the spirit of critical humanism and Erich Fromm’s ideal of productivity.”

About the artist:
Prof. Dr. Hito Steyerl, born in Munich in 1966, is considered one of the most important contemporary artists internationally. In 2017, she was named the most influential person in the art world by the art magazine Art Review . The Berlin-based art professor experiments with media forms of presentation, takes a critical look at artificial intelligence and reflects on the roles of art and museums. Her works are exhibited worldwide: in Berlin and Shanghai, at the Kunstmuseum Basel and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and at the Venice Biennale.

The Heidelberger Kunstverein is currently showing an exhibition by her on the subject of “Normality”. This exhibition focuses on earlier works by Hito Steyerl, in which she examined the various social dynamics and tensions that arose as a result of German reunification in the 1990s and early 2000s.

The Erich Fromm Prize, endowed with 10,000 euros, is awarded annually. It is intended to honor individuals who have made or are making outstanding contributions to the preservation or recovery of humanistic thought and action in the spirit of the social psychologist Erich Fromm through their scientific, social, socio-political or journalistic commitment.

Previous winners include Noam Chomsky, Anne Sophie Mutter, Hartmut Rosa and Gesine Schwan.

Media representatives are cordially invited to attend the event.
